Preoperative recommendations
Perhaps the most important preoperative recommendation is to choose a surgeon who can you trust. Although nose surgery is mostly performed by ENT specialists, however, many oral and maxillofacial surgery specialists and plastic surgeons, and even general surgeons also do rhinoplasty surgeries.
In my opinion, the expertise, knowledge and experience in rhinoplasty, associated with precision, artistic sense and innate aesthetics of the surgeon are more important than his specialty in obtaining elegant results in nose surgery. However, having ENT specialty is very helpful in the correction and treatment of respiratory problems, correction of crooked noses or sinus problems.
- The surgeon usually requests a number of photographic pictures of face and orders several tests. Rarely, X-ray films or CT scans are requested.
- It is usually recommended not to use aspirin or similar painkillers two weeks before the surgery.
- The patient is recommended to be fasting at least 8 hours before surgery, which means the patient should not eat anything in this period.
- If case of certain diseases, the surgeon asks for necessary advice by the relevant specialists. If the patient has nasal allergies or sinusitis, required medications are prescribed to control them preoperatively.
- Be sure to tell your surgeon about possible medications that you are taking. If you have a particular addiction, inform the surgeon before surgery.
- It is better to take a bath the night before surgery. In case of men, the long hair inside the nose should be shortened. Also, be sure to completely shave your face.
- Do not forget if you are not yet 18 years old, your father needs to sign the consent forms in the hospital. In case of girls and married women, the permissions of fathers and husbands are required, respectively.
- Although, as noted above, medically, nasal surgery can be performed even at the ages of 14 and 15 in case of sufficient growth.
- Taking aspirin or similar painkillers should be avoided 2 weeks before surgery. Using acetaminophen or acetaminophen codeine is permitted.
- It is better stop smoking a month before the surgery, although smoking is not an obstacle for anesthesia and nose surgery.
- As mentioned above, inform your surgeon about any previous diseases. Even if you have had a cold before surgery, tell the surgeon about it.
- Try not to wear valuable clothing at the day of surgery. Meanwhile, put on a dress that you can wear it easily after the surgery. For example, do not wear clothes without buttons.
- Make sure that a family member or a friend would look out for you in the first 24 hours after the operation.
